You’re on your own, kid. You always have been
“You know a smart girl can literally change my life for better. All I need in my life right now is a girl who can encourage me to pursue my dreams”
This is what I heard from a friend today.
I know, total bullshit.
Let’s be real for a moment.
IF YOU can’t change your life, if YOU can’t improve yourself, if YOU can’t fix your own mess, no one else can.
And no one else will.
Why the hell do we get off on this cultural obsession with the tired narrative where some dude or chick swoops in to rescue the protagonist from the mundane struggles of life?
I mean, seriously.
It’s always the same worn-out storyline: She’s drowning in despair and helplessness, and then, like some fairy tale cliché, here comes the damn knight in shining armor on his majestic white horse, ready to sweep her off her feet and whisk her away from the clutches of reality.
And what’s the grand finale? They live happily ever after in his palace, where she’s magically relieved of all responsibilities.
It’s like we’re hooked on this toxic myth that a woman can’t find fulfillment or contentment without a man riding in to save the day. As if her purpose in life is to wait around for some dude to solve all her problems.
News flash: Women are perfectly capable of standing on their own two feet, thank you very much.
And let’s not even get started on the absurdity of this idealized “happily ever after.” I mean, come on! Life doesn’t magically become a fairy tale just because you found your so-called prince charming.
Real life involves struggles, challenges, and the messy stuff we conveniently ignore in these fairy tales.
So, why the hell do we keep perpetuating this unrealistic, outdated nonsense? Maybe it’s time to ditch the worn-out scripts and embrace stories that reflect the messy, imperfect beauty of real life.
Because, let’s face it, a damsel in distress waiting for her knight in shining armor is so last century.
Let’s change the script to- you’re on your own, kid.
Because at the end of the day, you’ll be the one who’d be wiping your tears at night.
You’ll be the one who’ll have to find a job or start a business.
You’ll be the one to make yourself happy.
You’ll be the one to push yourself to get back up every time you fall.
You’ll be your own super hero. A hero who saved you from everything that life threw at you.
